Donald "DJ" Jackson is a lifelong Newark resident, community leader, and public advocate whose commitment to the city is rooted in both personal experience and professional service. Attended Bergen Street Elementary and Malcolm X Shabazz High School, both in the South Ward, DJ's life story reflects the journey of many Newark residents and fuels his determination to give back to the community that raised him.

As a City of Newark District Leader and Lead Outreach and Engagement Specialist with NCST's Overdose Response Team and Harm Reduction Center, DJ has worked on the front lines of Newark's public health and safety challenges. He specializes in community outreach and care coordination for people who use drugs, ensuring individuals and families are connected to life-saving services, treatment pathways, and long-term support. Through close collaboration with University Hospital, community organizations, and local stakeholders, his work has contributed to reductions in overdose fatalities and helped interrupt cycles of trauma that impact families and communities.

DJ understands public safety requires more than enforcement - it requires prevention, care, and opportunity. He is a strong advocate for evidence-based, trauma-informed, data and community driven strategies, which allows meaningful change to address substance use, homelessness, mental health, and community violence at their roots. His work bridges gaps between residents, service providers, and government systems to ensure policies are informed by lived experience and real-world outcomes.

Beyond public health, DJ is deeply committed to economic and resource development as essential pillars of community stability. He has worked to connect neighborhoods with funding opportunities, services, and partnerships that create pathways to jobs, education, and local investment. DJ believes that safer communities are built when residents have access to resources, economic opportunity, and responsive leadership.
